Respite Care

If you are caring for a parent or spouse at home, you already know the math: there is no sick day, no weekend, and no one else who knows the routine. REACH Home Care provides respite care in the Tri-Cities so you can go to your own doctor, sleep through a night, attend a grandchild's game, or take the vacation you have been putting off, knowing a trained, licensed caregiver is in your place.

We are a locally owned, Washington State-licensed in-home services agency (DOH license IHS.FS.61064639) based in Kennewick, and every caregiver we send completes the state's 75-hour Home Care Aide training at our own REACH Training Center, including dementia training, so you are not handing your loved one to someone who has to be taught the basics.

Respite care options

• Regular weekly breaks: the same caregiver on the same afternoons each week, which is the most sustainable form of respite because it becomes part of everyone's routine.

• Overnight respite: an awake caregiver overnight so you can sleep, one night or several nights a week.

• Weekend and vacation respite: 24-hour coverage in shifts for a weekend, a week, or longer while you travel.

• Emergency respite: when the family caregiver is suddenly ill, hospitalized, or called away, we can often start within a day.

• Respite for working caregivers: daytime coverage so you can keep your job while a parent lives with you.

What the caregiver does while you are away

Everything you do: personal care such as bathing, dressing, and toileting, meals, medication reminders, transfers and mobility help, light housekeeping, companionship, and supervision for a loved one with dementia or Parkinson's. Before the first visit, a care coordinator writes down the routine with you, from how your mother likes her coffee to which door she tends to wander toward, so the caregiver follows your plan rather than inventing one.

Family caregivers who never get a break burn out, get sick, and end up making a facility placement they never wanted. Regular respite is one of the best predictors of a loved one being able to stay home long term. Many of our respite clients also come to enjoy the change of company.

How to get started

1. Call us at (509) 491-1733. Tell us what a typical day looks like and where help is needed.

2. Free in-home assessment. A care coordinator visits the home, learns your routine in detail, and writes a care plan with you.

3. Caregiver match. We choose a trained caregiver whose skills and personality fit, and introduce them in person.

4. Ongoing adjustments. Hours and tasks change as needs change. There is no long-term contract.

Care can often begin within a day or two. We accept private pay and long-term care insurance, and we bill many insurers directly.

Frequently asked questions

How much notice do you need for respite care?

For regular scheduled respite, a few days is ideal so we can match the right caregiver. For emergencies, call and we will do our best to start within 24 hours.

Is there a minimum number of hours?

We can usually accommodate short visits for regular weekly respite; ask us about the schedule you have in mind.

Can you provide respite for someone with dementia?

Yes. Our caregivers complete Dementia Level 1 and 2 training, and dementia respite is one of the most common services we provide.

Can respite care be overnight or for a full week?

Yes. We provide awake overnight care and 24-hour coverage in shifts for as long as you need.

Does long-term care insurance cover respite?

Many policies do. We can help you check your policy and bill many insurers directly.

Will it be the same caregiver each time?

For regular respite, we aim for consistency with one primary caregiver and a trained backup who has also met your loved one.
