Nights are when things go wrong. The trip to the bathroom in the dark, the confusion at 3 a.m., the fall nobody hears until morning. And nights are when family caregivers break: you cannot work a job and care for a parent by day if you were up four times by night. REACH Home Care provides overnight home care throughout the Tri-Cities with an awake caregiver in the home from evening to morning.

We are a locally owned, Washington State-licensed in-home services agency (DOH license IHS.FS.61064639) based in Kennewick. Every caregiver completes the state's 75-hour Home Care Aide training at our own REACH Training Center, including Dementia Level 1 and 2, since nighttime confusion and wandering are the most common reasons families call us for overnight care.

Awake overnight care versus sleeping overnight care

An awake overnight caregiver stays up all night and checks on the client regularly. A sleeping overnight caregiver sleeps in the home and gets up when needed, which is appropriate only when the client rarely needs help at night. Most of our overnight clients need awake care, and we will help you decide honestly during the assessment.

What overnight home care includes

• Evening routine: dinner cleanup, medications, changing, toileting, and getting settled for the night.

• Bathroom assistance: help to the toilet or commode, incontinence care, and changing bedding when needed.

• Fall prevention: being there for every nighttime transfer so a stumble in the dark does not become a broken hip.

• Dementia nighttime care: calm redirection for sundowning and wandering, keeping the routine steady, and making sure exits are secure.

• Repositioning: turning bed-bound clients on schedule to protect skin.

• Monitoring: watching for breathing changes, pain, fever, or confusion and calling the family or 911 when something is wrong.

• Morning handoff: breakfast, medications, personal care, and a note on how the night went for the family or the day caregiver.

Who overnight care is for

Clients with dementia who are restless or wander at night, people with Parkinson's or PSP who need help to the bathroom, the first nights home after surgery or a hospital stay, clients on hospice, and any situation where the family caregiver simply has to sleep. Overnight care can be one night a week or every night, and it combines naturally with daytime visits or scales up to 24-hour care.

How to get started

1. Call us at (509) 491-1733. Tell us about your loved one and what the days and nights look like right now.

2. Free in-home assessment. A care coordinator visits the home, learns the nighttime routine and risks, and writes a care plan with you.

3. Caregiver match. We assign trained caregivers whose skills and personalities fit, and introduce them in person.

4. Ongoing adjustments. Hours change as needs change. There is no long-term contract.

Care can often begin within a day or two. We accept private pay and long-term care insurance, and we bill many insurers directly.
