The activities of daily living, or ADLs, are the things most of us never think about: getting into the shower, buttoning a shirt, making it to the bathroom in time. When age, illness, or a disability makes those things hard, the choice for many Tri-Cities families comes down to a care facility or help at home. REACH Home Care provides personal care and ADL assistance in Kennewick, Richland, Pasco, and the surrounding communities so your family member can stay home, clean, dressed, and comfortable.

We are a locally owned, Washington State-licensed in-home services agency (DOH license IHS.FS.61064639) based in Kennewick, and every caregiver we send completes the state's 75-hour Home Care Aide training at our own REACH Training Center, with hands-on skills-lab practice in exactly these tasks before their first shift.

What personal care and ADL assistance includes

• Bathing and showering: help getting safely in and out of the tub or shower, washing, drying, and skin care, with fall prevention and privacy built into every step.

• Dressing: help choosing weather-appropriate clothing and getting dressed and undressed, including braces, compression stockings, and adaptive clothing.

• Grooming: hair care, shaving, nail care, and oral hygiene, including denture cleaning.

• Toileting and continence care: discreet, respectful help getting to and using the toilet, managing incontinence products, and keeping skin healthy.

• Mobility and transfers: help standing, walking, and moving between bed, chair, toilet, and shower, including gait belt and Hoyer lift transfers.

• Eating and hydration: meal preparation and, when needed, help with eating and drinking.

• Medication reminders: prompting each dose on schedule and reporting anything unusual to the family.

Personal care is usually combined with the rest of what makes a day work: light housekeeping, laundry, errands, and companionship. It can be a few hours a few days a week, daily visits, or overnight and 24-hour care.

Dignity is the whole job

Nobody wants a stranger helping them in the shower. Our caregivers are trained to explain what they are doing before they do it, to let the client do as much as they can for themselves, to keep the person covered, and to never rush. We match caregivers carefully, and if the fit is not right we change it. Many clients ask for a caregiver of the same gender, and we accommodate that whenever possible.

Who this is for

Older adults who are unsteady, recovering from surgery or a hospital stay, living with dementia, Parkinson's, stroke, arthritis, or heart or lung disease, and adults with disabilities who need a reliable hand with daily routines. We also provide personal care as part of respite so a family caregiver can take a break.

How to get started

1. Call us at (509) 491-1733. Tell us what a typical day looks like and where help is needed.

2. Free in-home assessment. A care coordinator visits the home, looks at the bathroom and bedroom setup, and writes a care plan with you.

3. Caregiver match. We choose a trained caregiver whose skills and personality fit, and introduce them in person.

4. Ongoing adjustments. Hours and tasks change as needs change. There is no long-term contract.

Care can often begin within a day or two. We accept private pay and long-term care insurance, and we bill many insurers directly.

What are ADLs?

Can I request a male or female caregiver?
