Post-Surgery Home Care

The surgery went well. Now the surgeon's instructions say no bending past 90 degrees, no driving for six weeks, no lifting, keep the incision dry, and walk three times a day, and there is nobody at home to make any of that possible. REACH Home Care provides post-surgery home care throughout the Tri-Cities, often starting the day of discharge, so recovery follows the plan instead of ending in a readmission.

We are a locally owned, Washington State-licensed in-home services agency (DOH license IHS.FS.61064639) based in Kennewick. Every caregiver completes the state's 75-hour Home Care Aide training at our own REACH Training Center, with hands-on skills-lab practice on safe transfers and mobility assistance before their first shift.

What post-surgery home care includes

• Same-day start: we can plan with you before the surgery date and be in the home when your loved one arrives from Kadlec, Trios, Lourdes, or a surgery center.

• Following the surgeon's restrictions: hip precautions, weight-bearing limits, lifting limits, and incision care instructions kept in view and followed on every visit.

• Mobility and transfers: getting safely in and out of bed, chairs, the car, and the shower while strength returns, with gait belts or a lift as needed.

• Personal care: bathing without getting the incision wet, dressing around braces and slings, and toileting help.

• Medication reminders: pain medication on schedule, blood thinners and antibiotics not missed, and no accidental double doses.

• Meals, hydration, and household: cooking to any diet orders, keeping fluids up, laundry, dishes, and errands, including pharmacy pickups.

• Exercise encouragement: prompting the walks and home exercises physical therapy prescribed, and watching for swelling, redness, or fever.

• Overnight care: an awake caregiver for the first nights, when pain, medication, and bathroom trips make falls most likely.

Home health versus home care after surgery

Your surgeon may order Medicare home health, which sends a nurse or therapist for short visits. REACH provides the non-medical care between those visits: supervision, personal care, meals, mobility help, and medication reminders. Most families recovering from major surgery use both, and we coordinate with the home health team.

How to get started

1. Call us at (509) 491-1733. Tell us about your loved one and what the days and nights look like right now.

2. Free in-home assessment. A care coordinator visits the home, reviews the surgeon's discharge instructions and sets up the home, and writes a care plan with you.

3. Caregiver match. We assign trained caregivers whose skills and personalities fit, and introduce them in person.

4. Ongoing adjustments. Hours change as needs change. There is no long-term contract.

Care can often begin within a day or two. We accept private pay and long-term care insurance, and we bill many insurers directly.
