Companionship Care

Companionship Care

Loneliness is not a small problem for older adults. It is linked to faster cognitive decline, depression, and more hospital visits, and it tends to get worse quietly, after a spouse dies or driving stops. REACH Home Care provides companionship care in the Tri-Cities and Moses Lake: a consistent, trained caregiver who visits on a schedule, keeps your loved one engaged and active, and notices when something is off.

We are a locally owned, Washington State-licensed in-home services agency (DOH license IHS.FS.61064639) with offices in Kennewick and Moses Lake, and every caregiver we send completes the state's 75-hour Home Care Aide training at our own REACH Training Center. Companionship visits are provided by the same certified Home Care Aides who handle personal care, so if needs grow, the same person can help with more.

What a companionship visit looks like

  • Conversation and company: a regular visitor who knows the stories, the grandchildren's names, and the way coffee is taken.

  • Activities that matter to the person: cards, puzzles, crafts, music, gardening, reading aloud, church, or a favorite show together.

  • Getting out: walks along the Columbia, coffee downtown, the library, the senior center, a friend's house, or a grandchild's game, with a steady arm and a ride.

  • Staying connected: help with video calls, texting, photos, and cards so family far away stays close.

  • Meals together: cooking and eating with someone, which is often the difference between a real meal and crackers.

  • Light help around the house: tidying, laundry, errands, and medication reminders during the visit.

  • A second set of eyes: caregivers document each visit and tell family about changes in mood, appetite, mobility, or memory early.

Companionship for people living with memory loss

Companionship is often the first service families arrange when a parent is in the early stages of dementia and does not yet need hands-on care. Our caregivers complete Dementia Level 1 and 2 training, so visits are structured around familiar routines and calm redirection rather than correction. As the disease progresses, the same caregiver can move into our dementia home care program without starting over with a stranger.

How to get started

1. Call us at (509) 491-1733. Tell us about the person, what they enjoy, and how often you would like visits.

2. Free in-home assessment. A care coordinator visits the home, meets the person receiving care, and writes a plan you approve before anything begins.

3. Caregiver match. We choose a trained caregiver whose skills, schedule, and personality fit, and introduce them in person.

4. Ongoing adjustments. Hours and tasks change as needs change. There is no long-term contract.

Care can often begin within a day or two. We accept private pay and long-term care insurance, and we bill many insurers directly. See our long-term care insurance page for details.

Frequently asked questions

How often should companionship visits happen?

Two or three visits a week is the most common starting point, because it is often enough to become part of the week. Daily visits and longer visits are available.

Is there a minimum visit length?

We can usually accommodate short regular visits; ask us about the schedule you have in mind.

Will it be the same caregiver every time?

Yes, as far as we can make it. Consistency is the whole point of companionship care, so we assign one primary caregiver and introduce a trained backup for illness and vacations.

Can the caregiver drive my parent places?

Yes. Outings and rides to appointments, shopping, and activities are part of companionship care.

What if my parent says they do not need a companion?

That is common. We usually frame the first visits as help around the house or a ride to an appointment, and let the relationship grow from there. A good match and a low-key start make most of the difference.

Does long-term care insurance cover companionship care?

Many policies cover it when it is part of a home care plan. We help you check and bill many insurers directly.
